How the calculations work
Fuel cost per rental hour is fuel price × gallons per hour × Tach/Hobbs ratio. Hourly operating costs include fuel, oil, engine reserve, maintenance and propeller reserve. Annual fixed costs are divided by 12; the monthly loan payment is multiplied by 12 for its annual cost.
Each chart compares total monthly ownership and operating costs with owner revenue after the school’s percentage or hourly fee. Break-even rental hours are monthly fixed costs divided by the amount remaining per rental hour after operating costs and the school’s share. If that amount is zero or negative, rental activity cannot cover positive fixed costs.
Dots mark the six scenarios in each chart’s expandable scenario details. Hover or tap a chart, or use its hours slider, to inspect revenue, costs and monthly profit or shortfall. Open scenario details to edit the six rental-hour scenarios; their dots move with your changes.
Owner share is rental revenue less the school share or fee. B/E gap is owner share minus total monthly costs. A negative gap is a shortfall. “Defrayed” shows how much fixed ownership cost is covered while below break-even and displays “Profit” when the gap reaches zero. For fewer than one rental hour, owner cost per hour is displayed using a denominator of one; total costs and profit still include the actual rental hours.
